This paper re-examines Edward Selby Little's 1895 development of Kuling on Mount Lu through the lens of his under-studied final decade in Kerikeri, New Zealand, arguing that his retirement choices reveal continuities between his treaty-port entrepreneurialism and settler-colonial land practices rarely placed in dialogue in existing scholarship.
Drawing on parish records from Kerikeri's St James Church, Little's own 1899 memoir The Story of Kuling, and Historical Photographs of China (University of Bristol) archival material.
