Two Main Islands in the South Pacific
New Zealand (Māori: Aotearoa, "land of the long white cloud") consists primarily of the North Island (Te Ika-a-Māui) and South Island (Te Waipounamu), separated by the Cook Strait, with a total land area of roughly 268,000 km² — similar in size to the United Kingdom or Japan.
The North Island is dominated by volcanic plateaus and geothermal fields (the Taupō Volcanic Zone); the South Island is shaped by the Southern Alps, home to Aoraki / Mount Cook, the country's highest peak at 3,724 metres.
