Decades after the Pacific War, New Zealand and Japan built a deep postwar relationship: in Antarctic science, teams from the Ross Dependency have long exchanged expertise with Japan's polar research institute; Christchurch and Kurashiki in Okayama Prefecture became sister cities in 1973, the oldest such civic bond between the two countries.
Deep-sea fishing agreements, timber trade and the APEC framework have further cemented the bilateral economic partnership; the full map of the sister-city network appears in the ‘City Diplomacy’ entry of the Cross-Cutting Bonds pavilion.
