The "Out of Taiwan" Model & Māori Ancestry
Ancient genomic and comparative-linguistic evidence shows that the great Austronesian expansion ancestral to Māori traces back to Taiwan's indigenous peoples and the coast of southern China, spreading through the Philippines and Indonesian archipelago before eventually reaching New Zealand.
Core Māori vocabulary (numerals tahi/rua/toru; mata for "eye") corresponds clearly to Taiwanese Amis and Atayal cognates. The "Express Train Model" holds that a migratory wave some 4,000–5,000 years ago carried taro, yam and other crop lineages along a route that gave rise to the Lapita cultural complex.
