Kuling ("Guling") is a hill-station resort founded in 1895 by British missionary Edward Selby Little, who secured a 999-year lease over the valley from the Qing government. By the 1920s it had grown to more than 800 Western-style villas spanning over 20 national architectural styles — a landmark of East-West exchange still standing today.
The resort's most famous villa, "Meilu", later served as a residence for both Chiang Kai-shek and Mao Zedong, and hosted three Chinese Communist Party Central Committee "Lushan Conferences" between 1959 and 1970 — a striking continuity of the site's significance across radically different eras of Chinese history.
