A recurring weakness in New Zealand-Asia historical writing is over-reliance on English-language secondary sources for events that unfolded primarily in Mandarin, Japanese, Korean or Malay. The Edward Selby Little entry in this site's China pavilion, for instance, draws partly on an English-language blog's synthesis of Chinese-language local gazetteers this columnist has not yet been able to verify independently.
This is not a criticism of any single entry — it is a structural argument for why a site like this one should, over time, build genuine multilingual research capacity rather than translating outward from English-language scholarship alone.
